Watch: Unbelievable Footage of a Rain Shaft Captured Near Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu

Aug 28, 2023

Amidst the wondrous tapestry of the monsoon season, when the skies open up and the Earth receives the gift of rain, nature delights us with its unique displays.

One such spellbinding spectacle, recently caught on camera near the city of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, is a phenomenon called rain shaft. Its entrancing footage was recently uploaded on X (formerly Twitter) by a user named @MasRainman and credited to Arif Mohammad.

A rain shaft, often resembling a shimmering curtain of water, is a meteorological wonder that occurs during rainfall. It is a vertical column of localised precipitation that descends from dark and rain-laden clouds towards the Earth's surface, visible from the ground at large distances.

Rain shafts can vary in width and intensity, from a light drizzle to a torrential downpour. This variation is influenced by factors such as the cloud's height, the amount of moisture it contains, and the temperature difference between the cloud and the surrounding air. These factors dictate the speed and size of the descending raindrops, determining whether the rain shaft will be a gentle mist or a fierce deluge.

At times, rain shafts can look even more magical when their appearance is heightened due to sunlight or other light sources illuminating the falling raindrops, revealing the delicate translucence of these liquid prisms. Here’s an example:

Whether witnessed from a distance or felt up close, rain shafts encapsulate the harmonious interplay between Earth and sky. And the sight of this phenomenon painting the sky with its cascading beauty is yet another reminder of how mesmerising nature can be.
