Palia: Complete Tools & Equipment Guide

Jul 10, 2023

Make the most of your time in Palia and improve your skills with the help of high-quality tools.

The charming MMO Palia, currently in Open Beta, equips players with 8 different skills, each with a corresponding level that can be raised through performing tasks and activities Of these skills, 6 require specific tools which to accomplish the relevant activities: Fishing, Gardening, Mining, Hunting, Bug Catching, and Foraging.

The remaining two skills, Furniture Making and Cooking, do not utilize handheld tools directly. Instead, they depend on workstations crafted by the player. However, crafting these workstations requires the use of materials gathered with tools. Therefore, players should upgrade their tools as soon as possible to improve their performance in each skill and, in some cases, allow access to better materials.

Here’s everything players need to know about Palia’s tools, including how to get them, how to upgrade them, and additional benefits offered by each version of the tool. Players will also discover the importance of repairing tools in Palia, as it works a bit differently than many other games.

Tools in Palia can be used by pressing R and selecting the tool from the tool wheel. The player can move the tools to different slots in the wheel by clicking and dragging a tool to swap it with another. Each tool can be individually keybound in the game’s Settings > Control Settings > Keybinding menu.

Tools do not take up inventory space, so the player will have access to all their tools at all times. Any tool can be unequipped by pressing X. When a tool has been upgraded, the higher-quality tool will replace the previous version, so the player will never need to update anything in the tool menu.

All tools upgraded beyond the introductory “Makeshift” versions will suffer durability loss through continued use. If a tool degrades completely, it will revert to the previous, lower quality version and a new upgrade must be crafted. Players must be mindful of the condition of their tools and repair them as needed. The player can see a tool’s remaining durability by checking the bar around its icon in the tool menu.

Players can repair their tools by visiting Sifuu the Blacksmith's forge in Kilima Village and interacting with the anvil, and later at their housing plot by constructing a Repair Station. The player can purchase the recipe for the Repair Station from Hodari upon reaching Mining Skill Level 4.

All tools require either Gold or Repair Kits to have their durability restored. When repairing at the Blacksmith, the player can use either Gold or Repair Kits, while the Repair Station uses Repair Kits only. Repair Kits can be crafted at the Worktable. Upgrading any weapon from its Makeshift version to the next tier will unlock the Repair Kit recipe.

Each of Palia’s tools are upgraded by purchasing recipes, which become available upon reaching a certain level in the relevant skill. Once eligible, the player can visit the Guild Master of a tool’s corresponding skill to purchase the recipe. The player can locate these NPCs by opening the Map and looking for their portrait circle. Set that NPC’s location as a waypoint by clicking the middle mouse button, which will adjust as the character moves.

When the new recipe has been learned, the higher-quality tool can be crafted at the Worktable, and will replace the existing version of that tool in the player’s inventory. These recipes will cost Gold, and each calls for different materials to craft, some requiring upgraded versions of other tools in order to obtain. Each tool has three tiers of upgrades beyond the base version, and the player cannot skip any of these tiers. Each recipe will require the previous tier's tool among the materials needed.

The Axe in Palia is used for cutting down trees and bushes to obtain wood, which can be processed using a Sawmill Crafter and used to craft furniture and other items.
